RACHEL
Rachel serves as the Vice President and Secretary of Retained Lives, and her journey to joining the organization is nothing short of divine. Nearly five years ago, she reconnected with Penny while inquiring about tailoring a wedding dress for a friend. That chance meeting led her to learn about Retained Lives’ mission—and the rest is history.
Rachel’s connection to Cambodia runs deep. Born in a refugee camp in Thailand, her family fled the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime, immigrating to the United States when she was just 4 years old. Hearing her parents’ stories about the tragic times of the Cambodian genocide and the struggles in the refugee camps, Rachel developed a profound gratitude for the opportunities she’s had in the U.S. and a deep desire to give back. She often reflects on what her life could have been if her family hadn’t left Cambodia—perhaps facing the same struggles of extreme poverty or exploitation that Retained Lives works to prevent.
Since joining Retained Lives, Rachel has made an indelible impact. She helped establish the organization as a 501(c)(3), enabling greater transparency and trust with donors while expanding opportunities to serve the people of Cambodia. Behind the scenes, she manages crucial administrative tasks, including tax filings, compliance, reporting, social media, and business planning.
For the past three years, Rachel has traveled to Cambodia, serving as an interpreter, bridge-builder, and advocate for the people. She brings joy to the children through games, toys, and candy—earning her the affectionate title of “Teacher.” The kids adore her, and her presence empowers them while adding a touch of American culture to their lives.
Rachel’s love for the Cambodian people shines in everything she does. She is humbled by their kindness and resilience, finding pride in her heritage and inspiration in their stories. Every trip strengthens her gratitude and fuels her passion to continue this impactful work.
Thank you, Rachel, for being a vital part of the Retained Lives family and for giving your heart to serve the people of Cambodia.
